What exactly is Lean BPM?

Business Process Management (BPM) tools have developed a terrible reputation for being an overpriced, over-promising and under-performing solution for many businesses. This perception used to be associated with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) products. ERP formerly and BPM currently suffer from similar issues. It took time, but ERP implementations are now very standardized, but BPM projects haven’t achieved that success ... yet.

Lean BPM is an approach developed to tackle the issues associated with the traditional, broad scoped BPM projects. Its aim is to greatly reduce the effort usually associated with large efforts, extended periods of time taken up in mapping existing processes, creating replacement processes, and delivering the BPM solution itself.

Lean BPM looks at the key end-to-end processes, determines which processes are applicable targets for improvements, prioritizes the level of effort required based on probably gain, and manages scope creep along the way. The philosophy focuses on proper identification of issue areas, stakeholder support, flexible tools, and utilization of an incremental gains model considering continuous improvement.

In short, Lean BPM tackles the formerly-complex BPM solution in a flexible, risk-managing and faster reward method using shorter deployment cycles with measurable results. Then looking at the results over time to continue business process improvements for your organization long term.

BPM vs. BPR

In short, the table highlights the differences between BPM (Business Process Management) and BPR (Business Process Reengineering)

BPM

On-going effort

Improvement of existing process

Limited organizational change

Requires an incremental change in mindset

BPR

Project-based effort

Build process from scratch

Greater organizational change

Requires a fundamental change in mindset
